ABOUT THE AUTHOR
E.G. Lander was born in a tiny spec of a town in northern Minnesota called Deer River. He grew up on a fishing resort his parents owned, telling guests, almost as soon as he could talk, about his family of eight, the woods, the local Chippewa Indians, the lakes and the native game. It was there that he realized he would one day be a storyteller, a writer of what he knew and learned as a youngster. He postponed much of that to raise his own family, and build a career to launch him back into writing. He worked his way through college by writing papers for other students, then graduated with a BA in pre-law and political science. From there he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, becoming a teacher and a facilitator of MCI (the Marine Corps Institute). He got married and became a leader for a national retailer, honing his communication and writing skills with speeches and motivational leadership. But he was always dreaming of writing, especially telling stories about families and their ups and downs.
E.G. retired early to start that second career- the storytelling one. In the last four years, he has completed four manuscripts, (3 fictional and 1 non-fictional) and he’s working on a fifth one and getting ideas on #6. His first work was What’s in the Rear View Mirror? a 80,000 word saga about a family in South Carolina caught up in murders from 50 years ago that haunt them today, creating even more murders. It’s being published now, as is a 117,000 word story called Damn It, Wake Me Up, the drama of an American family that can’t endure the husband who gambles and cheats on his wife and eventually tries to kill her. However, she doesn’t die from the “perfect murder plan” he and his mistress devise. She ends up in a coma where she can hear and think. She learns their plan and wakes up and finds such sweet revenge. The 3rd fictional and beautifully illustrated work by illustrator J. L. Barnett, is entitled The Incredible Bucky Berrot, a fantasy about a family of birds in Australia and how Bucky changes the way all the birds in Bayberry Hills think about their laws and their enemies, as well as the possibility of God (why can’t a bird believe in God?). This colorful family and community fable was co-authored with E.G.’s grandson (10 year old Connor) to give a slant of assorted creatures probably not seen anywhere (60,000 words).
E.G.’s most recent work is called An Email From God. It’s the accounting of how he struggled to face his wife’s death and what God did to not only curb his suffering but to give him hope for the future. It is only 20,000 words but tells a remarkable story of love and miracles.
That’s his program: one manuscript/18 months. He is ahead of schedule.

Steve Summers was loved by everyone in Rymont, South Carolina. He would always be there for anyone who needed help, never asking for anything in return. One unusually dark and moonless night he headed home after helping a friend fix his dock. He squinted, struggling to see the road ahead.
He was concentrating on just two things, the worn-out white line in the center of overused Route # 5, and the gorgeous looking pie sitting next to him that kept sliding his way. That was his pay for fixing the dock, a homemade pie.
He didn’t see the truck that hit him. It pushed him off the road, hurling him towards a hundred year old oak that was stretching it’s arms over the asphalt. He died instantly, eventually creating the rehashing of a fifty year old saga that would engulf the entire town of Rymont. Many thought Steve died because of the blackness that night, or even killed himself to avoid the colon cancer his doctor had detected the previous week. But Granny knew better, she knew he was about to tell a story to “clean out his guilt” of something he did when he was in high school. She didn’t know what it was, but she knew that her husband did not die accidentally, or ran off the road on his own.
After she tells her grandson Billy how she feels, he agrees to try to find out what happened back in the 1950’s. He digs so deep that an unsolved murder is discovered, making him wonder if his grandpa was involved. His journey to the truth uncovers more than he expects, maybe more than his family would want discovered.
Someone driving a big green GMC truck tries to push Billy off the road and puts him in the hospital. He gets help from the Chief of Police, who digs more, getting close to the answers until he is murdered, too. By now all of Rymont has gone from a quiet dot on the map to a place where neighbors locked their doors at night for the first time. Eventually Billy gets help from an unexpected source, leading him to the real truths, both from 50 years earlier and to who is trying to kill anyone looking into those half-century old secrets. Now starts the hard part, getting the state police to believe him enough (from his hospital bed) to pursue the answers that will shock everyone.

What’s in the Rear View Mirror? by E.G. Lander is the first book written by this author who always wanted to be a writer. His other books are Damn It, Wake Me Up, The Incredible Bucky Berrot and An Email From God, which is a short non-fiction book about the struggles he encountered after his wife’s death and what God did to not only curb his suffering but to give him hope for the future.
What’s in the Rear View Mirror? is an absorbing story about a family caught up in murders from 50 years ago that haunt them today, creating even more murders. Set in Rymont, South Carolina, the story begins when Steve Summers was killed while heading home one dark and moonless night. Many thought it was an accidental death, or perhaps Steve kills himself out of depression as he was detected with colon cancer. But his wife Granny knew better. When she tells her grandson Billy, he is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery and digs up the past making startling discoveries. But someone is equally determined to keep the past buried with Billy ending up in a hospital bed, setting off a chain of events which resulted in ghastly murders.

Plot driven

There is a lot about What’s in the Rear View Mirror to like. Lander has obviously invested a lot of time in plotting out a very complex mystery and the more I read the more I felt like I was watching a Cold Case episode. Billy and the people he recruits to help him investigate work to pull the pieces of a 50 year old mystery together in order to solve the suspicious death of his grandfather. In doing so he uncovers evidence of a cover up that involves nearly the whole town. Due to the complexity of the mystery, it was at times tricky to keep characters straight.
The story is very plot driven and at times was very much a sequence of events. Some people like plot-driven stories, some don’t. I prefer more character development. Billy, as the main character, was pretty flat. Despite reading almost exclusively from his perspective (though not 1st person), I really don’t know anything about his character other than he was determined to solve the mystery and willing to cheat on his girlfriend. I didn’t particularly care about the grandfather because we never meet him. His character is described as a great standup guy for his entire life, yet he drank heavily in high school and stole his twin’s girl. However, as I said some people prefer plot over character.
There were also a few consistency issues that had me wondering. One examples is the technology available at the time. Based on the repeated reference to 50 years ago and 1951, then it is safe to assume the story is taking place in 2001. At the start of the story Billy doesn’t know how to use a computer. In 2001, I was a senior in college that year and that just seems really odd to me. I can buy not having a computer, but not knowing how to use one, or knowing that the local library/school would have one available? Then at the end of the story, Billy and his grandmother have cell phones and he has a computer. It was like a technology time jump.

Great Mystery Novel

I believe this is the first book by E. G. Lander. I certainly hope it is not the last. I even hope for a sequel or prequel to this one.
Lander maintains the sense of mystery throughout, only revealing the villian in the last few pages, much like the tradition of detective story authors of the past.
Lander also brings the reader up close and personal to the main characters and he interweaves both southern culture and dynamics of a small police force. I will not say more as to not give away hints that could reveal the mystery. I recommend you read, and be spellbound.

Suspenseful!

This was such a fun read! I read it in one sitting, and every time I thought I had cracked the case, a new plot twist was revealed. The southern setting, flawed characters, and interesting plot made the book very believable and helped me to connect to the story. Like an old oak, the roots in this story run deep and broad- spanning decades, generations, relationships. It’s always heartwarming to read a book with central themes about family, love, tradition, and unbroken promises. I cannot wait to see what happens with the Summers Family…

As an avid reader and one who does reviews for books read, I find this book very good. The author has a gift of writing as the story progresses, new and developing situations happened. At the end of each chapter, it left me with the desire to go to the next chapter when finishing a chapter. Very well written and also left me the feeling with trying to figure out what comes next. I recommend this book for a good read and wish the author great success in his future writings. I believe he has a “gift” for writing and keeping the story moving along. Well done and look forward to reading more from this writer.

Mystery and intrigue abound in this thrill-ride; non-stop action

What’s In the Rear View Mirror? by E.G. Lander is a new entry in the mystery genre, full of intrigue, automobile “accidents,” and even a firefight. Mirror? has an array of characters, most of them related. Steve Summers is grandfather (acting as dad) to Billy and Gary Summers. Steve and his wife have been caring for the boys since their parents died in a car accident, one of many in the story. The story is set in the here and now, though much of the tale focuses on events in the 1950s, when Steve was in high school. Steve’s vehicle gets bumps off the road in Rymont, a small town in the Carolinas. The ensuing story involves Billy trying to track down the who and why after his grandmother confides in him that she believes poor Steve was murdered and it was no “accident.” Billy’s detecting digs up a mysterious reference to “The Four Raven’s Promise” in Steve’s high school yearbook (Brian Kelly drowned in Buckley lake, and Billy believes his grandfather had something to do with that), a cryptic IRWY yearbook entry (like a 1950s version of texting acronyms but shorthand), a cadillac with South Carolina plates and a GMC truck that appear to be following Billy, and a few more dead bodies. Billy’s research finds that one of Steve’s classmates,Tim Sanders, changed his name to escape Rymont, possibly related to the Buckley Lake incident. Billy plays junior detective a little too well, and he ends up in an “accident” of his own,ending his season as the football team’s star with a leg that’s broken in three places. In the end, the mystery is solved and Lander wraps up all the loose ends neatly.
The book has positives and negatives. For positives, the author’s vocabulary is quite descriptive, employing strong adjectives; Lander describes the grandmother as “frail, but feisty,” which really tells quite a bit in such few words. The small-town charm of Rymont makes it a wonderful setting for a story that revolves around such a small group of people, but Lander expands the setting by bringing in characters from nearby towns and sending Billy outside Rymont as well. I enjoy a book that employs chapter titles instead of just numbers, so to me, that was a plus. Along the same lines, I think the title is approps, as Billy spends much of the book looking in his rear-view mirror both literally and figuratively.
As for the negative aspects, unfortunately, the copy I read (perhaps later editions have been corrected?) was riddled with typos and grammar mistakes. The consistent misuse of it’s instead of its (p5, 47, 95, 220, 226) made it clear the error was not just a typo but a misunderstanding of the difference. Other errors, such as me instead of my (p 65) and her (should be here p117,166), could be attributed to typos. Lander’s style is very heavy on the dialogue. Most of the book is dialogue, which is rather off-putting and makes for awkward reading. That being said, the dialogue is genuine and believable. I found that these two elements detracted from the reading experience for me.

Amazing Mystery with Perfect Small Town Dynamic

In “What’s in the Rear View Mirror?”, we are treated to an excellent mystery that takes advantage of just about every tool in the genre. A man with a complicated past is examined post mortem by his family as well as other people in the town, in order to see who might have wanted to kill him. Over the course of the investigation, there are a number of red herrings due to the sheer number of people involved in a couple of different crimes that took place long ago. Even those who have never read a mystery before, but enjoy shows like “The Killing” in which we begin to wonder if anyone is ever truly “innocent,” will enjoy the twists and turns of this book.
Author E.G. Lander has managed to live up to the expectations of any classic mystery novel in this book, but this book’s excellent structure as a mystery is not its only strong suit. There is also a great sense of family love. As previously stated, a prime majority of the investigation is carried out by the victim’s family, more specifically his grandson Billy. By the end of the book, Billy has gained a great deal of respect for his grandfather and the life he has lived. He begins to find that his grandfather was a more complicated man than he ever might have imagined, leading readers to wonder how much they really know about their own family’s history.
Lander does a great job of capturing this aspect of family dynamics, as well as the familial dynamic shared by many citizens of a small town. When combined with the incredibly adept command Lander appears to have over the mystery genre, this dynamic makes “What’s in the Rear View Mirror?” one of the better mystery reads available by an up and coming author.

The storyline is well plotted with details tying together to make the whole consistent, and there are enough side issues to make sure the full novel is more than single focused.
Most of the narration focuses on Billy, a teenage football star, though other parts follow police investigators. The concentration on Billy, and references to the young man’s awareness of his sexuality, suggest the main readership aimed for is YA, mainly male, though the length put it more into the adult category.
Most of the major characters are men. The fewer women characters are not as well drawn as the males. Mary, Billy’s grandmother-cum-mother is given her name only at the very beginning and end of the book; otherwise everyone, appropriately or not, calls her Granny or Grandma. A policeman refers to a fellow officer with the words “She’s a woman, but she’s damn good.” The messages might be subtle, but they’re not challenged, and they don’t need reinforcing in young males.
The writing itself could do with a little more attention – probably stronger professional editing. Points of grammar and some clumsy sentence construction take away from the full effect.
On the whole, What’s in the Rear View Mirror? should prove a enjoyable read for young males particularly.

The fact that I carried this book in my car, my purse, to the market and while my very active toddler played in the park should speak volumes in respect to my eagerness to get to the bottom of this well-spun mystery. The characters were so alive on the pages. I wanted to be able to read more in the very infrequent spare minutes of my busy days.
From the very first of the story I felt as though I could easily bump into any one of the characters in my own small town post office, grocery or beauty parlor. It could happen most any day of the week. I truly enjoyed the way EG Lander reveals the nuances of small town, southern life and the sense of community folks have for one another. Ties run deep; secrets do too. Promises are kept, even when it is dangerous to do so.
This transplanted northern author learned the southern ways and caught on quickly. He relied upon his background in business, sales and motivational speaking. It worked. He can make friends anywhere. I believe that’s why I as a reader love Steve, Billy, Granny, Nancy & Ray as I do. Lander’s experiences made his story authentic and captivating.
I was guessing from chapter to chapter as the mystery unfolded. I was very surprised at the ending.
I am eager to see what other yarns will come from this gifted weaver of words.

I bought this book on a whim for my kindle fire. The main character is Steve Summers. I liked that Steve fixed a friends dock for a pie, the good old fashion way, no money exchange. Remember those olden days where bartering was popular? I sure do.
So anyway, Steve is just like your next door neighbor or friend, helps out and gives his time even as he is exhausted but despite that does it anyhow. While driving home that same evening he gets hit by a truck, which kills Steve.
The second main character is Billy. Billy is being told a story about Steve “the real story” of how Steve died. After Granny shares the entire story, Billy decides that he wants to find out what “really” happened back in 1950. What he finds out will draw you into the story so deep that the pages will turn as time flies and the next thing you will know is the truth behind a bunch of hidden secrets and lies. This murder mystery takes place in small – town Rymont, South Carolina and mostly follows a high school football star (Billy) who is trying to solve the mystery surrounding his grandfather’s sudden death.
I read this book in one sitting, it was that interesting! Most of the time I can read a mystery novel and be able to predict what will happen next, but this book kept me guessing until the end. The plot was pretty intricate and fast – moving so I was almost never bored. Despite having such a complicated plot, i didnt notice any holes in the story as much as i have with other books, and i liked that. However, I felt that some parts of the novel were pointless fillers, like Billy ‘ s hormone – fueled relationship with the nurse. There were also a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes, I don’t know how so many errors were missed in the editing process. Overall, I enjoyed this book and would definitely read anything else coming from this author! He seems very creative and has a talent for writing realistic dialogue. I’d recommend this book to anyone who likes a good, quick read of a suspense novel!

This was one of those books that I had to keep stealing time to finish because I was hooked on it pretty quickly. The story starts out with the mysterious death of Scott Summers just as he is about to come clean about something hidden in his past long ago. We are then treated to quite the mystery as Scott’s grandson seeks to unravel the mystery surrounding his grandfather’s death as well as the mysteries buried deep in the past. As we race through the story the plot gets deeper as this shady little town’s demons are brought to the light of day and exposed for all to see. Every time I thought I had it all figured out more information would be revealed and I had to rethink my previous conclusions. The book was very well written and kept me on the proverbial “edge of my seat” as Billy drew closer and closer to learning the truth and all the danger associated with it.

What’s In the Rear View Mirror? by E.G. Lander is a 294 page mystery. It has thirty-one chapters and an author bio at the end. I loved the plot of the book, solving a cold case. Lander did an excellent job researching and delving back fifty years. It was believable. I liked how he layered the twists of the mystery. It ultimately led to much more than expected.
The writing was tight and unfolded nicely as the story progressed. I was never bored and finished the book in two readings. The characters were realistic and well written. The twists kept coming and ultimately played out to a satisfying conclusion. I loved Billy having to search for fifty year old clues. I felt the way the information was brought to light was spot on and very interesting. Excellent read.

I love this book because it’s like a cold case that reminds you that our elders were once young & vibrant. I grew up very close to my Grandmother and the stories she would tell….. made me feel like I was there. Without giving too much away, this book in my opinion has it all. It shows the close relationship between this young man and his Grandparents, the corruption of law enforcement as well as a peek into the life of a HS student. For those of us looking to relive those glory days. I swear I felt like I was watching an episode of Dateline only better because we get to use our imaginations. You will try to stay up reading this book from beginning to end so be sure to have a pot of coffee on hand. I just love this book!

This was a great mystery book. In the beginning of the book, Steven Summers dies in a car wreck. It was deemed as an accident as first. Then it was deem as a suicide because Steven Summers was recently diagnosed with cancer. His family knows this cannot be the case because he was not depressed and was ready to fight the cancer. Another reason his grandson is suspicious is because his grandmother tell Billy that her husband that people may be coming to look for his family but would not tell her why. Because this, Billy goes on this search to clear his grandfathers name.
This was an awesome book. I hope this author will write more stories. I was glued to my seat.

Lots of people come clean on their deathbeds about the things they did in their past that no one knows the full truth about. This is a story about just that, but moreso about not being able to tell the truth because you aren’t alive to do it.
I love the way the author brought more into the story between the grandparents and the grandchild Billy. E.G Lander created a believable relationship that would send anyone on a mission to solve that which they don’t know the full truth of yet. I love the twists and turns and that Billy will fight to the very end to uncover the truth.

What’s in the Rear View Mirror? by E.G. Lander is the first book written by this author who always wanted to be a writer. But authorship came to him late in life, only after college graduation, a stint with the U.S. Marine Corps, a leader for a national retailer, and finally realizing his long-cherished dream of writing stories about families and their ups and downs. His other books are Damn It, Wake Me Up, The Incredible Bucky Berrot and An Email From God, which is a short non-fiction book about the struggles he encountered after his wife’s death and what God did to not only curb his suffering but to give him hope for the future.
What’s in the Rear View Mirror? is an absorbing story about a family caught up in murders from 50 years ago that haunt them today, creating even more murders. Set in Rymont, South Carolina, the story begins when Steve Summers was killed while heading home one dark and moonless night. Many thought it was an accidental death, or perhaps Steve kills himself out of depression as he was detected with colon cancer. But his wife Granny knew better. Plot driven

There is a lot about What’s in the Rear View Mirror to like. Lander has obviously invested a lot of time in plotting out a very complex mystery and the more I read the more I felt like I was watching a Cold Case episode. Billy and the people he recruits to help him investigate work to pull the pieces of a 50 year old mystery together in order to solve the suspicious death of his grandfather. In doing so he uncovers evidence of a cover up that involves nearly the whole town. Due to the complexity of the mystery, it was at times tricky to keep characters straight.
The story is very plot driven and at times was very much a sequence of events. Some people like plot-driven stories, some don’t. I prefer more character development. Billy, as the main character, was pretty flat. Despite reading almost exclusively from his perspective (though not 1st person), I really don’t know anything about his character other than he was determined to solve the mystery and willing to cheat on his girlfriend. I didn’t particularly care about the grandfather because we never meet him. His character is described as a great standup guy for his entire life, yet he drank heavily in high school and stole his twin’s girl. However, as I said some people prefer plot over character.
There were also a few consistency issues that had me wondering. One examples is the technology available at the time. Based on the repeated reference to 50 years ago and 1951, then it is safe to assume the story is taking place in 2001. At the start of the story Billy doesn’t know how to use a computer. In 2001, I was a senior in college that year and that just seems really odd to me. I can buy not having a computer, but not knowing how to use one, or knowing that the local library/school would have one available? Then at the end of the story, Billy and his grandmother have cell phones and he has a computer. It was like a technology time jump.

Wow.. This is the first book I have read by this author.. I started reading on rainy Tuesday.. I figured I would read a chapter or two and then clean house and do laundry.. After a few pages I was really into it.. I could not put it down.. I said ok next chapter I will get some work done.. Needless to say laundry was still there and house was not cleaned until I read the book to the last word.. I thought I had it figured out and then the tables would turn and I thought it was another person.. Keeps you on the edge of your seat.. Got to the last page and I was sad it ended.. I wanted to read more.. I am hooked on this new author. Can not wait to get to the next book.. Hurry up e g lander and publish another…

One of the best books I have ever read. I started reading it and could not put it down until I finished it. I got so involved in the story that I felt as if I were there. The author made the Summers family seem real and have real life issues. Every time I thought I knew who the killer was I got surprised. I literally sat for almost 3 hours to finish the book. Its an amazing book and the author brought the characters to life. Love EG Landers already and this is the first book I have read of his. Cant wait until the next one comes out, I will be watching for it.

New authors come and go every day. Very few come on the scene with the ability to weave a tale that will make you sad to reach the end and longing for more. The characters were compelling and believable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an excellent read. I look forward to reading more of this authors work.

One of my favorite books I have read. The author does an amazing job of keeping your interest. I couldn’t put the book down. I highly recommend this book!!!! I bought four more books as Christmas presents for my family. I cannot wait for E G Lander’s next book as I will be the first to purchase.

What’s in the Rear View Mirror? by E.G. Lander is the first book written by this author who always wanted to be a writer. But authorship came to him late in life, only after college graduation, a stint with the U.S. Marine Corps, a leader for a national retailer, and finally realizing his long-cherished dream of writing stories about families and their ups and downs. His other books are Damn It, Wake Me Up, The Incredible Bucky Berrot and An Email From God, which is a short non-fiction book about the struggles he encountered after his wife’s death and what God did to not only curb his suffering but to give him hope for the future.
What’s in the Rear View Mirror? is an absorbing story about a family caught up in murders from 50 years ago that haunt them today, creating even more murders. Set in Rymont, South Carolina, the story begins when Steve Summers was killed while heading home one dark and moonless night. Many thought it was an accidental death, or perhaps Steve kills himself out of depression as he was detected with colon cancer. But his wife Granny knew better. When she tells her grandson Billy, he is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery and digs up the past making startling discoveries. But someone is equally determined to keep the past buried with Billy ending up in a hospital bed, setting off a chain of events which resulted in ghastly murders.
E.G. Lander’s What’s in the Rear View Mirror? is a surprisingly enjoyable mystery with twists and turns all the way ending in a shocking and unpredictable conclusion. The interesting characters, volatile plot and the fine writing of the author combined well to make this an interesting read!

Plot driven

There is a lot about What’s in the Rear View Mirror to like. Lander has obviously invested a lot of time in plotting out a very complex mystery and the more I read the more I felt like I was watching a Cold Case episode. Billy and the people he recruits to help him investigate work to pull the pieces of a 50 year old mystery together in order to solve the suspicious death of his grandfather. In doing so he uncovers evidence of a cover up that involves nearly the whole town. Due to the complexity of the mystery, it was at times tricky to keep characters straight.
The story is very plot driven and at times was very much a sequence of events. Some people like plot-driven stories, some don’t. I prefer more character development. Billy, as the main character, was pretty flat. Despite reading almost exclusively from his perspective (though not 1st person), I really don’t know anything about his character other than he was determined to solve the mystery and willing to cheat on his girlfriend. I didn’t particularly care about the grandfather because we never meet him. His character is described as a great standup guy for his entire life, yet he drank heavily in high school and stole his twin’s girl. However, as I said some people prefer plot over character.
There were also a few consistency issues that had me wondering. One examples is the technology available at the time. Based on the repeated reference to 50 years ago and 1951, then it is safe to assume the story is taking place in 2001. At the start of the story Billy doesn’t know how to use a computer. In 2001, I was a senior in college that year and that just seems really odd to me. I can buy not having a computer, but not knowing how to use one, or knowing that the local library/school would have one available? Then at the end of the story, Billy and his grandmother have cell phones and he has a computer. It was like a technology time jump.

What’s in the Rear View Mirror? is a well written murder mystery. I do not normally read this type of a book, but it was recommended to me, so I started reading it on a Tuesday afternoon and finished it the following day! I couldn’t put it down! It held my interest and I highly recommend it.

What a great story. Quick easy read that keeps you guessing. Just when you think you figured it out there was a new twist. Doesn’t seem like this could be his first writing. It seems like E Lander is a seasoned suspense writer. I look forward to his next novel.
